Courtyard Miramar Conversion

Courtyard Miramar Conversion

Challenge:

Courtyard Miramar by Marriott was converted from a Holiday Inn in San Diego, California.  Designed by Shannon Rice, ASID, the project began in March of 2020.  Covid created a lot of challenges for the project.  The world shut down, including the building department and Marriott International.  Ownership pressed forward.  Payte Miller Interiors worked diligently to support all phases of design review with little resources or support.  Construction began and after 23 months of hard work, the marquee signage was installed, and the property was officially a Courtyard.

Improvments:

The Bistro Bar Design was the most impressive improvement for this property.  The bar was not visible from the lobby previously.  It was also three steps lower than the lobby floor level.  A design that allowed guests to see the bar without obstruction was the challenge.  The new design successfully provided the “Bar Forward” concept, including a fully equipped Pantry and a “We Proudly Serve Starbucks” function.

The Fitness Center was another great property improvement.   It was previously placed in an unused guestroom at the end of a long corridor.  Centrally locating the new fitness center to be adjacent to the pool and meeting rooms was a win.  The ammenities and equipment far exceeded brand standards.

Decor:

The décor palette using the Generation 6.5 brand standards is prevalent throughout with the focus on Southern California Spanish architecture and design.  A custom lighting package was created to blend brand standards with contemporary Spanish décor.  The hotel is adjacent to MCAS Miramar, a Marine Corps air base, the property sees a lot of US Military and contractors.  Two digital graphic walls were installed in recognition for their service, celebrating aviation and the work of our US military.

Achievement:

Conversion renovations are by far the most challenging type of commercial construction.  Add to these typical challenges, a Global pandemic.  All things considered, this project will forever be the greatest experience and achievement for this firm, and we are so proud of the work and the outcome.
