Join us for an evening of appreciating the exemplary student work and projects by our DI students. Celebrate the opening of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Program Showcase with a reception in the Showcase Room surrounded by beautiful work. Mingle with students and faculty while exploring BFA projects. Our DI students have been waiting for this showcase room to open to the public and now is your chance to experience it.

Showcase Opening Reception: 5pm -7pm

Not yet a DI student? Come tour our ID studios and cutting-edge tech labs, and engage with students and faculty. The tour begins at 6:15pm. All are welcome!

Have you ever considered hospitality design practice? Have you thought about entrepreneurship or the importance of professional interior design credentials such as @NCIDQexam? Come speak with Shannon Rice on November 19th at DI.

Meet DI faculty Shannon Rice, NCIDQ. An educator, design practitioner and business owner with over 20 years of professional experience in the field of hospitality, Shannon brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the commercial design and business practice courses she teaches in the BFA program.

Shannon’s specialties include hotel re-branding, property improvement plans, and in-house design services for a major vacation ownership developer. Outside of teaching and professional practice, Shannon has been supporting the interior design community through active service on the professional boards of the San Diego Chapter of NEWH (@newh) and ASID (@asidsandiego), where she served as Chapter President.

A true believer in the power of design and its ability to change lives, Shannon has been serving as an Advocate & Fundraiser Committee Member for @humbledesignsandiego, non-profit helping families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishings and design services. 

Q&A With Shannon:

What inspires your designs?

My clients are my biggest inspiration.  I am the type of designer who collaborates deeply with the vision of my clients and when they share what they want, I go to work to curate that vision.  I’m drawn to interesting and unique inspirations from my nature walks, community activities and living spaces active with a vibe that can affect my emotional experiences.  I am a functionality junkie, finding excitement around efficiencies and creative solutions.   Lastly, my students are a huge inspiration as I get to mentor so many different types of creatives who bring their collective backgrounds, sharing small gifts along our journey.

💌Another lovely hand written card arrived from a client I first helped in 2013, and again in 2023-2024. So much to unpack as us Designers know the amount of time we give our clients far exceeds the invoice they get for our services. It’s the time we spend thinking about their project, in the evenings and on weekends when a thought or idea arrives unexpectedly to the “stop dead in your tracks” moments when we finally lay our eyes on the perfect product we’ve been searching for but haven’t been able to find. The commitment is real and notes like these give meaning to this unpaid “conceptual time” as seen and appreciated. Here’s to clients buying stamps and mailing cards, the gesture is worth its weight in gold. 📪

I am so pleased to share that the Design Institute

I am so pleased to share that the Design Institute’s team of BFA and MID students, alumni, and faculty have been featured in the Vision 2074 for a Sustainable Paradise exhibition, an event of the @wdcsandiegotijuana2024 World Design Capital 2024 series. Our DI team came together to create a design proposal that reflects the cross-cultural experience of living in our region, knitting it into a vibrant whole energized by art and commerce. I’ve spent years searching for a nonprofit organ

I’ve spent years searching for a nonprofit organization that I can get behind and support. When I found Humble Design in 2021 I was amazed at how perfect of a fit their mission was for me. Since then, I have encouraged my husband David to join in on all the fun and now the two of us have a mutual love for the growth we see happening before our eyes.

Last Thursday night was the fourth annual San Diego Humble Design Welcome Home fundraiser at the beautiful @sandiegowineandculinary venue. I am so blessed to have been able to provide fundraising opportunities which resulting in significant contributions. Both David and I are so grateful for our friends, family and peers who are willing to help us in what little way we all can make a difference in the lives of previous homeless families and veterans.

I want to give special things to:

@sunbury_international for your tireless efforts in securing an auction item for a 1 week stay at a beautiful resort in Barbados and a one week stay at the Florida mall hotel

@elizabethirelandphoto for your generous photography and makeup session package, which was a huge hit

@blackwhalelights for your donation of home accessories, and partnering with @kizmet_interiors_ for interior design services

And to my late mom @cbmama5 for bringing your dear friend Tracy and I together, who donated a one week stay at her condo in Palm Springs.

So much good for such a good cause making good change for good people by good people.

When a home remodel transitions from interior design to framing, there is a noticeable shift in both the atmosphere and emotional experience. Interior design is about envisioning the final look—finishes, fixtures, furniture layouts—while framing is rooted in the structural foundation of the project. Anyone who knows me knows without a shadow of a do

Anyone who knows me knows without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite color combinations are teal and orange. Walking into @joyce_dtla for lunch with my loves @sunbury_international and I found the interiors to be stunning on so many levels. Wonderful atmosphere, fantastic food (see Dillon’s joy over his oysters) and of course making new friends: Owner’s Prince & Athena. Next time you are in downtown LA, you must visit for some true hospitality…it was one of the best meals and experiences ever! Thank you @lisatlong for the recommendation 😘

After two years of meticulous planning, relentless

After two years of meticulous planning, relentless dedication, and countless hours of hard work, this ambitious project finally reached completion. This endeavor, which began as a mere idea pre-COVID, evolved into an exciting adventure of possibilities, capturing the essence of creativity and perseverance.

The renovation project reached a pivotal moment when the decision was made to remove a central wall and open up the space. This aspiring plan required the installation of a steel beam, a crucial step to ensure the structural integrity of the home while transforming the area into a more expansive and inviting environment.

Opening up the space not only enhanced the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the area but also underscored the power of thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship in redefining a living environment.

As the final touches were added and the project neared its culmination, a wave of excitement swept through the team. We unveil this kitchen, family room and guest bath before and after photos as a testament to the client’s requests and our ability to visualize and achieve their desires.

When deciding to hire an interior designer, it is critical you consider only doing business with a qualified NCIDQ certified professional.

The NCIDQ stands for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. It is administered and developed by the CIDQ: Council of Interior Design Qualification.

A NCIDQ certified designer will ultimately guarantee you make sound design decisions, provide confidence in the process and help navigate the stress of construction. An NCIDQ certified designer is:

1. Serious about their education;
2. Has learned from the best, not just fumbled through enough projects to be proficient;
3. Is organized in their practice and processes;
4. Knowledgeable about lawful and safe building practices;
5. Knows about more than just the interiors;
6. Is credible, honest, has integrity and ultimately raises the bar;

Many government projects (local city, county, state and federal jurisdictions) require firms to have NCIDQ Certified Interior Designers working on their projects. Why not yours too?

It is clear the NCIDQ qualified designer has it all. Inquisitive, disciplined, organized, caring, adaptable, experienced, refined, clever and has earned the right to call themselves Interior Designers. Choose your designer with awareness and be proud of who you hire.

Teaching Commercial Studio courses at the Design I

Teaching Commercial Studio courses at the Design Institute of San Diego is not just a job, it’s an experience that fills the soul. Watching these young design students grow through the last two years of their four year bachelor’s degree is transformative not just for them, but for me as well. I am so proud of their hard work and dedication to this amazingly rewarding career choice and know, they will achieve greatness. This group in particular started their long journey right before the world shut down. Because they stayed the course, they completed the program with appreciation for how powerful the statement “design impacts lives” really is. I am grateful to have celebrated with them last night on their special commencement ceremony. Wishing them everything they deserve and more…x🥂

A recent stay at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

A recent stay at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa where I found myself pondering this creative headboard. Using an angled inset Tambour to frame an upholstered center panel looks fantastic and functions great for the users comfortability. My question… or rather wonder is, has the IG or TikTok world created a handheld device that cleans the dust out of the grooves of tambour?

Would love a link if anyone has seen or knows of such a contraption. Creating beautiful spaces is one thing, knowing how the client will need to take care of the product is another!

Oh how I love everything about this classically designed upscale watering hole, Ember and Rye at the park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad, California.

The use of the color teal invites the soul to pull up a barstool and relax. Coordinated brass finishes on the bar facade and stool feet is a brilliant pairing to the penny tile accent floor detail. The incredibly popular terrazzo like quarts, such as White Diamond from Silestone, pulls through the modern countertop to finish it all up. In the dining room adjacent to the bar, a bold custom digital graphic Wallcovering niche pairs next to heavy traditional wainscoting allows for balance between the two styles. And the cherry on top, a soft shade of teal painted on all walls to remind us why we are there.

Home offices were the #1 renovation request from 2

Home offices were the #1 renovation request from 2020-2022 as a result of the COVID pandemic. As we role out of this demand, home owners are seeking for ways to utilize these now no longer needed rooms created often out of carved-out spaces from garages and living rooms. Our client had done just that, took out a parking space from their garage to create a home office and now, no longer need it.

Our client’s love to watch movies, Netflix Series, Sunday football and award shows so a Entertainment Room came calling. Things we considered:

✔️ Motorized black-out roller shade with side channels and hem bar to ensure no light reflection

✔️ No glass in french doors to maximize ambient light from adjacent room

✔️ Individual recliners

✔️ Shared cup holders and storage for snacks

✔️ Textile on the floor to help with sound
